I am inspired by the beauty and the power of nature. Many times while
traveling, I have been moved to practice asanas near a cactus, on the
beach, or near a temple. Yoga, means union. Practicing yoga in nature, brings
me closer to union, with myself, others, and the earth. By
aligning my energy with the earth, I feel a deep peace, and more fully
alive.

One dawn on a beach in Southern Baja, as the sun was rising in the East,
the full moon was setting in the West. The waves were rolling
ashore. The great balance, the strength of the ever moving celestial
bodies, and the fluidity of the ocean, brought me to reverse warrior.

During a stop, in Catavina, central Baja, in
a beautiful, wind swept desert of boulders and large cacti, I
felt warrior I, (virabhadrasana I). The wind whipped around me,
and yet I remained as grounded as the rock, with small movements,
like the cactus. |

These two of the photos were taken at a Mayan
temple called Chitchen-Itza, on the Yucatan Peninsula,
Mexico. I went to the temple in the early
morning, before the throngs of tourists arrived. As I came
face to face with the base of this magnificent pyramid, I felt
compelled to be on the earth, kneeling at it’s feet. I laid
down in child’s pose on the earth. |

As I walked through the ruins, as if in a dream,
I found this tree. It's shadow branches seemed just as real as
it's actual branches. I felt the stillness of tree pose (vrksasana).
Within a corridor of ancient Mayan engraved totems, I felt eagle
pose, (garudasana), mimicking the spiral forms (left). |

Last Thanksgiving, while visiting with family
in Del Mar, California, we went for a walk on the beach with our
dog. My niece, Shalini, and I thought it'd be fun to practice
wheel (urdhva dhanurasana), after exploring these rock fissures
in the cliff. |

While living in Maui, Hawaii, I would go to
this spot on the North Eastern shore, called Kipahulu, near
Hana. I would camp, hike, and swim in the Seven Sacred Pools.
Trikonasana, or triangle pose, felt like a joining of the elements,
the solid lava, the frothy sea, and the infinite sky. |
